தென் அமெரிக்காவில் நடந்த முதலாவது FIFA உலகக் கோப்பை போட்டியின் வெற்றியை தொடர்ந்து, இரண்டாவது போட்டி இத்தாலியில் நான்கு ஆண்டுகளின் பின் நடந்தது. சுவீடன் மட்டுமே தனது நாட்டில் உலகக் கோப்பை போட்டியை நடத்த விரும்பியது, ஆனால் பின்னர் அதுவும் மறுத்துவிட்டது. இந்த FIFA உலகக் கோப்பை 367,000 உதைபந்தாட்ட ரசிகர்கள் கண்டுகளித்ததால் மிகவும் பிரபல்யமானது. 16 தேசிய அணிகள் கலந்துகொண்டதால் போடிகள் பலவழிகளிலும் முன்னேற்றமடைந்தது.
As the first ever FIFA World Cup was very successful in South America, the tournament took place again 4 years later, this time in the European country, Italy. The only other country interested to host the World Cup was Sweden but they withdrew later. This World Cup was very popular with a total of 367,000 people watching the matches at the venues. This time there were no group stages in the competiton, it was a complete knockout tournament. The biggest surprise in the round of 16 was the hosts, Italy beating the USA 7-1 on the 27th May 1930. Italy, drew against Spain in the quarter finals meaning that the match had to be replayed. The replay was won by Italy. The top goalscorer of the competiton was Czechoslovakian, Oldrich Nejedly with 5 goals in 4 matches.
